English language proficiency

The language of instruction at Georgian College is English. In addition to the academic admission requirements, all applicants for whom English is not their first language and/or are coming from countries where English is not an official language, must provide proof of language proficiency.

Applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria to meet Georgian’s language proficiency requirements:

- Must have completed three full years of study at the secondary school (high school) level in English in a country where English is a primary language (four years are required for BScN and Pharmacy Technician.
- Study must be in Canada only for Pharmacy Technician) OR
Must have completed one full year of study in an accredited postsecondary program in English in a country where English is a primary language (not applicable to BScN or Pharmacy Technician) OR
- Must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or Canadian provincial equivalent) and English credit (Grade 12 U, M or C) issued by a public or Catholic school board (not applicable to BScN or Pharmacy Technician) OR
- Provide proof of graduation from one of the authorized Georgian College partner school pathway programs (not applicable to BScN or Pharmacy Technician)

Note: International students applying through the SDS Program (Study Direct Stream) from India, China, Vietnam or Philippines should note that the SDS IELTS requirements are 6.0 with no score less than 6.0 in any of the four bands. For programs listing a higher IELTS requirement, the higher score will be required for admissions. Priority for applicants will be given to those who meet SDS requirements.

Program description
The Acupuncture diploma program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the entry-level standards of practice set by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO). This program provides in-depth theoretical and clinical components of Acupuncture. Students benefit from expert clinical training that combines integrative healthcare models with Traditional Chinese Medicine, providing graduates with the necessary skills to practice as a regulated healthcare professional.

Career opportunities
Graduates of the Acupuncture program may be employed in fertility clinics, doctors" offices, physiotherapy clinics, naturopathic clinics, massage therapy clinics or chiropractic offices. As well, graduates often choose to open their own clinic space thus becoming self-employed and/or eventually specialize and become involved in one specific area of healthcare such as pain management, dermatology or gynecology.

Program description
This program is designed to assist Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) in developing themselves further as a nurse practicing in acute complex care and prepare them with the clinical skills to work in an acute complex care setting in Ontario. Emphasis is placed on the application and evaluation of advanced theories and practice in acute primary care, and guidance of others as part of the health care team. Students gain advanced theoretical and experiential knowledge in pharmacology, health assessment and emergency nursing through classroom instruction, simulation labs and practicum placements.

In order to provide quality practicum placements, students will be placed in a variety of agencies in the region serviced by the campus. Students are required to provide their own transportation.

Career opportunities

Graduates may find employment opportunities in acute primary care settings within general hospitals, special hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged, clinics or community health services.

Admission requirements
- post-secondary degree in nursing from an accredited nursing education program;
- current registration with the nursing regulatory body in their home province/state and or county; (i.e. letter, membership card, etc.); and
- applicants must submit a current letter from an employer"s human resource department verifying employment as a nurse.

Criminal Reference / Vulnerable Sector Check


Placement agencies require an up-to-date clear criminal reference check and vulnerable sector check prior to going out on placement. Students should obtain their criminal reference three months prior to placement; checks conducted earlier may not be considered current. As some jurisdictions require longer lead-time for processing, please check with the program coordinator to ensure you allow for sufficient turn-around time. It is the student""s responsibility to provide the completed document prior to placement start.

NOTE: Individuals who have been charged or convicted criminally and not pardoned will be prohibited from proceeding to a clinical or work placement.

Program description

In this graduate level program, students learn to provide a client-centred and client driven continuum of treatment for individuals with addiction problems. With a solid framework of individual and group counseling skills, the students study individual, gender and societal considerations and the resulting treatment implications. They practise motivational interviewing techniques and learn the importance of matching client needs with intervention options. In addition, students reconstruct education and prevention strategies and design, facilitate and evaluate such tools.

Career opportunities

Career opportunities may include addictions counsellors, substance abuse counsellors, chemical withdrawal management counsellors, addictions nurses, problem gambling counsellors and attendants in residential, out-patient, and street-front treatment settings.

Program description

This one year program is designed to provide paramedics with advanced knowledge and skills for practicing emergency health care and to prepare them to function as a leader in emergency situations. Graduates of the program will have demonstrated the ability to safely and competently care for patients of all ages and administer advanced medical treatment measures. The program is comprised of classroom instruction, skills and patient simulation labs, clinical placement and field placement.

Accreditation

The Paramedic program follows the National Occupational Competency Profile for Paramedics as approved by the Paramedic Association of Canada and is accredited by EQual™ Accreditation Canada.

Career opportunities

Graduates who already possess provincial certification at the Emergency Medical Care Assistant (E.M.C.A.) level, will, after successful completion of the Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Program, be eligible to write the Ontario ACP certification exam and gain employment as ACPs with ambulance services throughout the province or across Canada.

- Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant (AEMCA) license
- A minimum of 4,000 hours of work experience within the last five years with a licensed paramedic service demonstrated by providing letter(s) from current or recent employers.
- Applicant must be currently employed by a licensed paramedic service. 
- Letter of current good standing from the applicant"s base hospital or regulatory body (from out of province applicants).

- Selection testing in Primary Care Paramedic Theory (cut score 70%)
- Letter from your base hospital or regulatory body (for out of province applicants) indicating current good standing
